It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of David Holden Bowie at the age of 71, on July 4, 2017. Loving husband to Sheila, born in Chatham on June 22, 1946 he was the son of the late Holden and Annie (Flynn) Bowie. Predeceased by sisters Mary Gordon (Leonard) and Lucy Laviolette (Claude).
In addition to his loving wife, he leaves behind his children Jason Bowie (Vicki) of Riverview, Tanya Bowie (Larry) of Riverview, Teena Allison (Kyle) of Miramichi, Peter Bowie (Tammy) of Dartmouth, stepdaughters Genna Gouchie of Douglastown, Gillian Gouchie (David) of Gander and grandchildren Mackenzie, Mitchell, Parker, Cameron, Emma, Avery, Maddix, Holden, Ryan, Bryce. He will be missed by his brothers Paul, Bernard, Richard and sister Margaret, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
A family man of great conviction, he treated people with kindness and humility and was a lifelong educator, and former District Superintendent of Schools, past President of the New Brunswick School Superintendent's Association (NBSSA), member of the Rotary Club of Chatham, and Big Brothers Bowl for Millions volunteer. He was dedicated to building the sport of curling on the Miramichi. He served as President of both Chatham and Newcastle Curling clubs. His greatest pride was having the opportunity to co-coach the NB Provincial Visually-Impaired team at the Canadian Curling Championships.
He was a skilled and avid fly fisherman, hunter and was fiercely competitive. He will always be remembered for his sense of humour and the love of a good laugh. He was famous for "Dave'isms" and use of words that most people had to look up immediately in the dictionary.
David was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather, who loved life and a good debate. He applied these values and skills to die on the Lord's terms after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer.
The family would like to thank Dr. Paul Renfrew, Dr. Mohammed Harb and Dr. Luc Arsenault and Dr. Joe Wrigley. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the St. Michael's Basilica Capital Campaign or any other donation of one's choice.
