Sister Eva Jane Underhill, R.H.S.J. (Sister St. Augustine)
Sister Eva Jane Underhill died peacefully at the Sisters of Providence Motherhouse in Kingston, ON on May 29, 2019.
Sister was 88 years of age of which 68 years were spent in Religious Life.
Sister Eva was born in Barnettsville, N.B. the daughter of Hazel Astle and Herman Underhill.
Sister is predeceased by her parents and brothers Herman and Reggie.
She is survived by her sisters Margaret Murphy, Vera Gillespie, Marie Underhill, Sandra Dann, Lorraine Walls, and Mildred Ewen; and brothers Clarence, Daryl, Leslie and Shirley as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
Sister Eva entered the Congregation of Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph in Chatham, NB on July 28, 1948 and took the name of Sister St. Augustine.
She made Final Profession on August 22, 1953 at the R.H.S.J. Motherhouse in Montreal. Sister was a member of the Chatham RHSJ Community (St. Michael’s Convent) from 1950-1953, 1955-1958, and 1971-1972.
Over the years Sister Underhill lived and worked in Chatham, NB, Perth Road, ON, St. Joseph Provincial House, Amherstview, ON, Hotel Dieu Convent, St. Catharines, ON, Hotel Dieu Convent, Cornwall, ON, Langlade Memorial Convent, New London, WI, and at the Juniorate Formation House in Arnprior, ON.
During these years some of her responsibilities were as Treasurer, Assistant Superior, Local Superior, Sacristan, Annalist, Assistant to the Provincial Treasurer, and Librarian.
Friends & family will be received at Mary, Mother of Compassion Chapel, Sisters of Providence Motherhouse, 1200 Princess Street, Kingston, ON on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Mary, Mother of Compassion Chapel on Thursday, June 6, 2019 at 10:00 a.m.
Rite of Committal with prayers in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Sister Eva Underhill was born on July 29, 1930, in Barnettsville, New Brunswick, to Hazel Astle and Herman Underhill.
She was third in a family of 13 children.
She had six sisters and six brothers: Margaret Murphy, Vera Gillespie, Marie Underhill, Sandra Dann, Lorraine Walls, Mildred Ewen, Clarence Underhill, Reggie Underhill, Daryl Underhill, Leslie Underhill, Shirley Underhill and Herman Underhill.
Eva attended Barnettsville Public School and then took typing lessons at night school before entering the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph in Chatham, New Brunswick on July 28, 1948.
She was given the name of Sister St. Augustine and made her First Profession at Hotel Dieu, Kingston, on August 22, 1950, and made her Final Profession on August 22, 1953, at the R.H.S.J. Motherhouse in Montreal.
After taking her Final Vows in 1953, Sister Underhill was missioned to novitiate at Mount St. Joseph on Perth Road, north of Kingston from 1953-1955, where she served as an assistant to the Local Superior and Councillor, and worked in the Kitchen and Laundry.
Sister then returned to St. Michael's Convent in Chatham, New Brunswick where she resided for another three years.
In 1958, Sister Underhill was sent to the newly opened St. Joseph Provincial House in Amherstview, Ontario, where she worked from 1958 until 1961 at which time she was missioned to the Hotel Dieu Convent in St. Catherine's Ontario, where she worked as Sacristan and Refrectorian until 1970.
Sister Underhill returned to the Provincial House in 1970-1971 before being sent once again to Chatham, New Brunswick.
While at St. Michael's Convent. Sister Underhill attended the commercial course at the St. Michael's Academy, graduating in 1972.
After that completion, of her studies, Sister was sent to the Hotel Dieu Convent in Cornwall, Ontario, to serve as treasurer, a position she held from 1972 until 1985.
In addition to her work in Cornwall she also served as the accountant for the Hotel Dieu Kingston Community between 1981 and 1985.
Following the completion of her lengthy term in Cornwall, Sister Eva had a sabbatical year in 1985 at St. Joseph's Convent , New London, WI, where she served as Sacristan.
In 1986-87, Sister served as Treasurer and Annalist of the Juniorate Formation House in Arnprior, Ontario, before being asked to return to St. Joseph Provincial House to serve as Assistant Superior.
She held this role from 1987 until 1991 at which time she became Assistant to the Provincial Treasurer.
Sister Underhill continued in this capacity until 1993, when she was appointed Local Superior of the St. Joseph Provincial House Community, a position she held until 1999.
Following a well-deserved sabbatical in Winnipeg, Sister Underhill became the Local Community Treasurer of the Cornwall Community from 2001-2002 before returning once again to Amherstview where she served as the Sacristan and Librarian of the St. Joseph Regional House.
With the closure of the Regional House in 2012, Sister Underhill took up residence in the Kingsdale Chateau as a member of the St. Joseph Community and in August 2015, moved to the R.H.S.J. community at the Sisters of Providence Motherhouse in Kingston.
Sister Eva was a true R.H.S.J. showing compassion and respect for everyone she came in contact with, and it was obvious that she cared what was happening in their lives.
She had a wonderful sense of humour, enjoyed a good joke, and her laughter was contagious.
Sister was meticulous and this showed in everything she set out to accomplish.
She was a true friend to many, and will be missed, but always remembered.
Sister Eva died peacefully on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at the Sisters of Providence Motherhouse, Kingston, Ontario.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held in Mary, Mother of Compassion Chapel at the Sisters of Providence Motherhouse in Kingston, Ontario, on Thursday, June 6, 2019.
Father Robert Masters presided and gave the homily, Sister Isabel MacLaughlin, R.H.S.J., presided at the graveside.
The Pallbearers were Sister Underhill's brothers: Daryl, Clarence, and Shirley, nephews, Troy Underhill and David Murphy, and Gordon MacDonald a member of the Knights of Columbus, Blessed Sacrament Parish, Amherstview, Ontario.
Honorary Pallbearers were Sisters Rena Doucette, R.H.S.J., Sheila Boase, R.H.S.J., Annette Valade, R.H.S.J., and Theresa Shannon, R.H.S.J.
Sister is buried in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Kingston, Ontario.
