PUBLIC NOTICE

Escuminac Disaster Commemoration planned for 10:30 a.m. - June 16th, 2024, at Bay du Vin, New Brunswick…

The Most Rev'd David Edwards, 10th Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Fredericton and Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Canada (Dioceses of Montreal and Quebec and those in the Atlantic Provinces), will lead the annual Service of Holy Communion and Remembrance on Sunday, June 16th, 2024, 10:30 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Bay du Vin, New Brunswick, in honour of the 35 fishermen who died 65 years ago in the Escuminac Disaster of June 19th & 20th, 1959.

The Escuminac Disaster continues as the worst industry-related tragedy to occur in the history of the Province of New Brunswick.

Of the 32 boats which put out to sea on that fateful night, 22 did not return. 51 souls said goodbye to their families and friends that day, and only 16 would get to hug their loved ones less than 24 hours later. The youngest victim was only 13 years of age.

The impact of those deaths during the 1959 Escuminac Disaster continues to have an indelible impact in the local community, the Province of New Brunswick, and across Canada, more than six decades later.
