Elmira McKay, wife of the late William “Bill” McKay of the Miramichi Senior Citizens’ home, formerly of Old King George Highway, Newcastle, passed away at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on June 9th, 2018 in her 106th year. Born in Sillikers, NB, Elmira was the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Annie Rachel (Travis) Scott.
Elmira spent 20 years as a nurses’ aid at the Miramichi Hospital and also was an Avon representative. Elmira was a lifetime member of the Newcastle United Baptist Church and the oldest member of the Miramichi Highland Society. Elmira’s good health and keen mind was attributed to her love of reading and learning. She loved to sing gospel songs.
Elmira is survived by two sons: Robert (Gloria) McKay and John (Sandra) McKay, both of Miramichi; one brother: Bernard Scott of Miramichi, two grandsons: Darrell McKay (Karen) and Brent McKay (Stephanie); her three great grandsons: Luke Mesheau (Emily), Brandon and Michael McKay and step granddaughter Ashley MacInnis. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents and her husband, Bill, Elmira is predeceased by her granddaughter: Wendy Jean McKay; three sisters: Lavina Marks, Charlotte Mullin and Ida Jardine as well as three brothers: Percy, David and Hudson.
Visitation will be held at Bell’s Funeral Home, 651 King George Highway, Miramichi, NB on Wednesday, June 13th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral service will be held at the Point Church, Newcastle, on Thursday, June 14th at 11 AM with Pastor Kevin Matthews officiating. Burial will follow in the Miramichi Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, in Elmira’s memory, donations may be made to a memorial of one’s choice.
