M. Rose Burtt of King George Hwy, Miramichi NB, passed away Thursday June 25, 2020 at Miramichi Regional Hospital, at the age of 79.
Born in Lower Stone Ridge NB, she was the daughter of the late Willis and Mary (McCann) Burtt. She was a retired schoolteacher at Miramichi Valley High School, faithful member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and a past member of Newcastle Kinnetts.
Her decision to come to the Miramichi to teach at Harkins High School was the launch for many of us in her family to call this wonderful place “home”. Her family was cherished as were the conversations, lunch outings and support from her close group of friends. She was always up for a game of scrabble where we would sometimes ask “is that really a word?” and laughter would ensue. She enjoyed reading, listening to Maritime/Irish music, watching TV and, of course, her Church. She avoided the “computer age” with a preference for actually talking to people, writing letters or sending cards.
It was obvious she treasured and appreciated young people and listened intently to their stories and accomplishments; she was, after all, a young person at heart. She would often encounter students she had taught and was always interested in their life journey. At MVHS, many of these students referred to her as “Mrs. V”.
She loved flowers, but would have preferred that in lieu of flowers donations be made to “Cure SMA Canada”. Rose’s great grand- daughter, Nora, has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Our dear Nora enjoys her life, in large part, due to ongoing research by SMA professionals.
She is survived by two daughters, Amanda Munn (Fabian) of Miramichi and Andrea Vanbuskirk of Charlottetown PEI, one son Tony Vanbuskirk (Shelly) of Miramichi, two sisters, Shirley Wilkins of Fredericton and Yvonne Burtt of Ontario, two brothers, Laurence Burtt (Carol) of Miramichi and Kirby Burtt (Jean) of Fredericton, five grandchildren, Mandi McGrath, Ryan Vanbuskirk, Dana Stewart, Evan Vanbuskirk and Robin Vanbuskirk, three great grandchildren, J.J. Lavoie, Zoe Lavoie and Nora Stewart, also many extended close family members.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a great granddaughter Gwen and a brother Sonny Burtt.
At the request of the family there will be no visitation. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday July 3, 2020 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, with Father Antonio Reyes officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot of the church cemetery.
